Homeschool Curriculum Disadvantages
Thinking about using a curriculum in your homeschooling? Then think about these disadvantages first.
Disadvantages of using a Curriculum |
Although there are some
advantages to using a homeschool curriculum, there are also some disadvantages you need to be aware of.
- Expensive
Getting your lessons pre-packaged can be an expensive business - especially if you pick a program that doesn't suit your family. If you are considering a curriculum for the first time, then try a free homeschool curriculum or a used curriculum to start with.
- Textbook based
Most, although not all, programs are textbook based. This does not suit all children's learning styles - or indeed many homeschooling styles. Are your children the type who enjoy book work? Or is getting them to sit still a nightmare?
- Restrictive
One of the advantages of homeschooling is the flexibility we have in studying all types of subjects. Pre-packaged programs generally have quite a narrow syllabus.
- Can be Overwhelming (or underwhelming!)
Because pre-packaged programs are based around an 'average' child, they may not be suitable for your child's level in different subjects. So some lessons may be too easy - and others may provide unrealistic expectations about what your child can manage. Often it is better to wait until your child is ready to learn something - but having to 'keep up' with your curriculum will make you anxious about the wait.
- Interferes with Natural Learning
Curriculums enourage a 'school at home' approach so you may miss the opportunity to choose more flexible homeschool scheduling. They also restrict a more child-led method of education.
If you think you may like to try homeschooling without a curriculum, then this site is full of
homeschool activities you can try.
