The Seasonal Tree
This puppet show was inspired by an idea I read about on this website - The seasonal tree.
My son Archie and I had great fun making leaves and collecting items to hang on our tree. It's very satisfying painting autumnal colours, as the children can easily get very effective results!
From this process, we had an idea to use the acorn caps as hats for finger puppets and design a puppet show. We then set about making a stage using an overturned toy box, but a cardboard box would be ideal. We drew a picture to stick on the side of the box facing the audience and set the scene further by scattering leaves and acorns on the top of it. In reality, the acorn finger puppets we found too much of a challenge - their hats kept falling off and the faces on our fingers kept vanishing, so eventually we made hand puppets out of socks. We sewed on buttons for the eyes and then spent a while making a story line for our show, with an autumnal theme.
When we were happy with the show, we created a poster advertising the performance to other members of the household. During this process we looked at the function of posters as giving information in interesting ways, and set about making our own one.
The show was such a success, we have another one planned for winter-time! I was amazed at how much learning we incorporated into this mainly creative activity.
Thanks Julie for the initial inspiration :)
